Ukraine's late-November 2020: record COVID-19 cases and a football setback
As December 2020 began, Ukraine had just passed 700,000 confirmed COVID-19 cases after three successive daily records, while its national football team lost a UEFA ruling.

What was the state of Ukrainian public life on 1 December 2020? The days leading up to it were dominated by a steep rise in COVID-19 infections, with a sporting decision adding a smaller note of disappointment.
Three records in three days
On 26 November 2020, Ukraine reported a new single-day record of 15,331 cases, bringing the total number of confirmed cases to 677,189. The next day, 27 November, brought another record of 16,218 cases and a nationwide total of 693,407.
On 28 November, the country reported a further record of 16,294 new cases over 24 hours. That pushed the cumulative total past 700,000. Each of the three daily figures exceeded the one before it, so the country entered December with the highest daily counts of the pandemic so far.
The figures show the pace of the spread. The total rose by roughly 16,000 on each of those days, and the daily record was broken on three consecutive days. For a public health system and for local authorities, that meant a rapidly growing number of confirmed infections in a very short period.
A ruling in the Nations League
Separately, on 25 November 2020, the UEFA appeals committee awarded a technical defeat to Ukraine's national football team in its UEFA Nations League 2020–2021 match against Switzerland, which had been scheduled for 17 November. As a result, Ukraine was to play in Division B in the following season.
What the picture showed
Taken together, these items gave a snapshot of the final days of November 2020. The pandemic figures were the more consequential, with a new high set on each of three consecutive days and the 700,000 mark passed. The football ruling carried a concrete sporting consequence, namely Ukraine's placement in the lower division for the next season.
