Ukraine's Supreme Court elects a chief as COVID records fall
A judicial appointment and a record pandemic toll marked the same day in Ukraine, with new restrictions announced for Kyiv.

What did Ukraine's public institutions face on 22 October 2021? The day brought a change at the top of the judiciary and another grim set of figures from the pandemic.
Vsevolod Kniaziev was elected head of the Supreme Court of Ukraine on 22 October 2021.
A second record day for COVID-19
The same day, Ukraine reported a record for the second consecutive day: 29,785 new COVID-19 cases and 614 deaths. A day earlier, on 21 October 2021, the country had reported 22,415 new cases and 546 deaths in the previous 24 hours. That brought the nationwide total of confirmed cases to 2.7 million and the death toll to 62,389.
As reported at the time, Ukraine closed schools and public venues in Kyiv. In other "red zone" areas, schools would be allowed to reopen only if teachers were vaccinated.
The two developments were unrelated, but together they described the day: a leadership decision in the country's highest court and a public-health situation that was forcing new limits on daily life in the capital.
