Ukraine's vaccine deal and a deadly hospital fire, February 2021

Posted: | Filed under: Society | by Borderland staff

A look back at two health-related reports from the first days of February 2021, as the country dealt with the COVID-19 pandemic.

What did Ukraine's health system look like on 10 February 2021? Two reports from the days before that date give a partial picture: one of a vaccine supply secured, the other of a fatal fire in a hospital.

On 5 February 2021, Ukraine secured 12 million doses of the vaccine developed by AstraZeneca and Novavax, as reported at the time in coverage of the COVID-19 pandemic in Ukraine.

One day earlier, on 4 February 2021, a fire broke out at the Zaporizhzhia Regional Clinical Infectious Diseases Hospital in Zaporizhzhia. Three patients and a female anaesthesiologist died. Two other people were injured.

Together, the two reports show a country that had secured a large vaccine supply while its infectious disease care faced a tragedy in the same week.
