What happened in occupied Berdiansk and Russia in late August 2022?

A look back at two reports from the days before 30 August 2022: a fatal bombing in an occupied Ukrainian city and the arrest of a Russian critic of the invasion.

What was reported in the days leading up to 30 August 2022? Two items stood out, one from occupied southern Ukraine and one from inside Russia.

On 26 August 2022, a bombing killed a deputy chief of traffic police in Berdiansk, a city in Zaporizhzhia Oblast under Russian occupation. Russian authorities accused Ukrainian forces of carrying out the attack. The incident was part of events in the Southern Ukraine campaign of the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine.

Two days earlier, on 24 August 2022, police arrested Yevgeny Roizman, the former mayor of Yekaterinburg and a Kremlin critic. He was detained for "discrediting the Russian army" after criticising the invasion of Ukraine.

The two reports came from different places but were linked by the war: one concerned violence in an occupied Ukrainian city, the other the treatment of a critic of the invasion in Russia.
