A look back at two reports from the days before 30 March 2025: an attack on Sumy and a stabbing in Amsterdam.

What was the news picture on 30 March 2025, as two earlier reports still shaped coverage involving Ukraine and Ukrainians? One concerned a Russian missile strike on Sumy; the other a stabbing in the Dutch capital.

Sumy under missile attack

On 24 March 2025, a Russian missile attack hit a hospital, a school and a residential area in Sumy, in north-eastern Ukraine. Ninety people were injured, including 17 children, as reported at the time.

Sumy Oblast had been partly occupied since the start of the full-scale invasion on 24 February 2022. Russian forces failed to capture the city of Sumy, the oblast capital, though some settlements, such as Trostianets, were taken.

Stabbing in Amsterdam

On 27 March 2025, five people were wounded in a mass stabbing at Dam Square in Amsterdam, Netherlands. Police arrested a 30-year-old Ukrainian citizen from Donetsk. He was being investigated on suspicion of a terrorist motive, as reported at the time.

The two reports concerned very different events, one a strike on civilian sites in Ukraine and the other a criminal investigation in the Netherlands. Both were part of the news record in the days leading up to 30 March 2025.
