A retrospective on two developments on 1 October 2019, as the impeachment inquiry into the US president widened around Ukraine.

What was happening in Washington on 1 October 2019, as the inquiry into the US president's dealings with Ukraine gathered pace? Two developments were reported that day, both tied to what became known as the 2019 Trump–Ukraine scandal.

Rudy Giuliani, the personal lawyer of US President Donald Trump, hired Jon Sale to represent him in the impeachment inquiry investigating the president. Sale was a prosecutor from the Watergate scandal.

Separately, Steve Linick, the inspector general of the US State Department, requested an "urgent" briefing with senior congressional staff members regarding Ukraine. The private meeting was scheduled to take place on 2 October 2019.

Together, the two moves showed the inquiry drawing in both the president's personal legal circle and the State Department's internal oversight office, with Ukraine at the centre of the questions being asked.
