A look back at reports of shelling and strikes on hospitals and other civilian buildings in late January 2023.

What was happening to civilian infrastructure in the war in the days before 1 February 2023? Reports from the last days of January pointed to attacks on hospitals in two different parts of the front.

On 29 January 2023, Russian forces shelled the southern city of Kherson. Three people were killed and six others were injured. The shelling also damaged a hospital, a school and a bus station.

On 28 January 2023, Russia claimed that a Ukrainian HIMARS missile strike hit a hospital in Novoaidar, in Luhansk Oblast. According to that claim, 14 people were killed and 24 others injured, including patients and medical staff.

Both incidents were part of the wider war that followed the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine, in the southern campaign and the battle of Donbas respectively.
