What happened to the Ukraine International Airlines jet that left Tehran for Kyiv? On 8 January 2020, a Boeing 737-800 crashed while taking off from Tehran Imam Khomeini International Airport. All 176 people on board were killed.
The flight, designated Flight 752, was a scheduled international passenger service from Tehran to Kyiv. The crash took place amid the 2019–20 Persian Gulf crisis, and as reported at the time, the incident was under investigation.
What was established later
The cause was established only afterwards. According to later accounts, the aircraft was shot down shortly after takeoff by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). That was not part of the initial reporting of the crash on 8 January 2020.
