What the 27 September strikes showed across Ukraine's regions
A look back at an exchange of strikes that hit regions from Kyiv to Odesa and across the border into Russia's Belgorod Oblast.

How widely did the war's reach extend across Ukraine's regions in the closing days of September 2026? The reports available for 29 September 2026 point back to 27 September, when Russian and Ukrainian forces exchanged strikes that killed at least eight people in Ukraine and one in Russia.
The attacks were spread over a broad geography. In Ukraine, they hit Kyiv and its outskirts, the Kharkiv and Odesa Oblasts, Sumy, and Russian-occupied Enerhodar. On the Russian side, Belgorod Oblast was also struck.
A familiar pattern in the south
Odesa and its surrounding region have been targeted repeatedly since the conflict began, by shelling and air strikes, partly fired from Russian warships in the Black Sea. The city has also been hit by Russian cruise missiles.
Zaporizhzhia Oblast, which appears in the wider pattern of southern attacks, has likewise been hit again and again since 27 February 2022. In a report dated 24 February 2026, the Zaporizhzhia Regional Military Administration said 812 residents of the region had been killed, including 45 children, and that more than 3,400 people had been injured. Strikes there continue regularly, sometimes involving hundreds or thousands of munitions a day.
What the day showed
The exchange on 27 September involved the capital region, the north-east, the east and the south in a single round of attacks, while Enerhodar, under Russian occupation, was also among the places hit. The death toll of at least eight in Ukraine and one in Russia was the figure reported for the exchange as a whole.
