Which regions bore the brunt of strikes on 28 September 2026?
A look back at the cross-border exchange of strikes reported across Ukraine and in Russia's Belgorod Oblast.

Which parts of Ukraine absorbed the latest exchange of strikes as 28 September 2026 began? The previous day, 27 September, Russian and Ukrainian forces traded attacks that killed at least eight people in Ukraine and one in Russia, as reported at the time.
The strikes hit Kyiv and its outskirts, as well as the Kharkiv and Odesa Oblasts. Sumy was also struck, as was Enerhodar, which was under Russian occupation. On the Russian side, the attacks reached Belgorod Oblast, where one person was killed.
A familiar pattern in the south
Odesa and its surrounding region had been targeted by shelling and air strikes on multiple occasions since the start of the Russian invasion. Some of that fire came from Russian warships in the Black Sea, and the city had also been hit by Russian cruise missiles.
Zaporizhzhia Oblast, close to Enerhodar, had likewise been hit repeatedly by Russian munitions since 27 February 2022. Civilian infrastructure and housing in the regional centre had been heavily damaged or destroyed. In a report dated 24 February 2026, the Zaporizhzhia Regional Military Administration said 812 residents of the region had been killed, including 45 children, and that more than 3,400 had been injured.
A wide geographic spread
The reported attacks stretched from the capital to the north-east, the south and the occupied territories, and across the border into Belgorod Oblast. At least nine deaths in total were reported for the exchange.
