What was the picture for civilians in eastern Ukraine by 11 April 2022? The reports from the preceding days pointed to attacks on places meant to shelter or move people to safety.

On 8 April 2022, Russian forces struck the railway station in Kramatorsk, which was being used to evacuate civilians. Officials reported 57 people killed and 109 wounded. Many European officials condemned the attack, while Russia's Ministry of Defence denied carrying it out.

Hospitals in Luhansk Oblast

On 7 April 2022, Serhiy Haidai, governor of Luhansk Oblast, reported that all hospitals in the province had been completely destroyed by the Russian Armed Forces. Russia denied the claim and accused Ukraine of destroying its own hospitals.

Calls for an end to the fighting

On 6 April 2022, Pope Francis condemned the massacre in Bucha during his weekly audience at the Vatican. He called for the war to stop and for weapons to fall silent, and urged an end to sowing death and destruction.

By 11 April 2022, these accounts, from the station in Kramatorsk, from Luhansk Oblast and from the Vatican, formed the backdrop to the civilian toll of the war.
