What the war's civilian toll looked like by 11 April 2022

A look back at reports on attacks affecting civilians, hospitals and evacuation in the days before 11 April 2022.

What did the civilian cost of the war look like as of 11 April 2022? Reports from the preceding days pointed to attacks on places meant to shelter or move people to safety.

On 8 April 2022, Russian forces struck a railway station in Kramatorsk that was being used to evacuate civilians. Officials said 57 people were killed and 109 wounded. Many European officials condemned the strike. Russia's Ministry of Defence denied carrying out the attack.

Hospitals in Luhansk Oblast

On 7 April 2022, the governor of Luhansk Oblast, Serhiy Haidai, reported that all hospitals in the province had been completely destroyed by Russian forces. Russia denied the claim and accused Ukraine of destroying its own hospitals.

Condemnation abroad

On 6 April 2022, Pope Francis condemned the massacre in Bucha during his weekly audience at the Vatican. He called for an end to the war, for weapons to fall silent, and for an end to the sowing of death and destruction.

Elsewhere, on 7 April 2022, Kazakhstan announced it would lift COVID-19 travel restrictions at its borders with Kyrgyzstan, Russia and Uzbekistan.
