What Ukraine's April 2020 quarantine rules required of residents

A look back at the restrictions that took effect in Ukraine days before 9 April 2020.

What did life under quarantine look like in Ukraine on 9 April 2020? By then, a set of Cabinet of Ministers restrictions had been in force for three days, having taken effect on 6 April.

The rules barred people from being in public places without a mask or respirator, or without documents. They also banned walks in parks and public gardens, and movement in groups of more than two people.

The government also required people over 60 to self-isolate for the duration of the quarantine. This placed a specific obligation on one age group, in addition to the general limits on public behaviour.

Taken together, the measures regulated everyday conduct: what people had to carry, where they could walk and how many could move together. The age-based requirement set older residents apart from the rest of the population.

The rules were announced as applying for the length of the quarantine, so they were tied to the coronavirus disease 2019 emergency rather than set as permanent changes.
