What Ukraine's May 2019 orthography and shipbuilding news meant

Posted: | Filed under: Society | by Borderland staff

A look back at two items reported in the days before 28 May 2019: a new spelling code and a record-size vessel.

What was on the public agenda in Ukraine as of 28 May 2019? Two reports from the preceding days stood out: one about the written language, the other about shipbuilding.

On 22 May 2019, the Cabinet of Ministers approved the Ukrainian orthography in a new edition. The text was prepared by the Ukrainian National Commission on Orthography.

On 23 May 2019, the Nibulon shipyard in Mykolaiv launched the self-propelled transshipper of project P-140. It was reported as the largest vessel in the history of independent Ukraine.

The two items concerned different spheres, one of language rules and one of industry, but both were part of the news picture in the days leading up to 28 May 2019.
