A retrospective on the mass grave reported near Kyiv and on protests in Russia and occupied Enerhodar in the days before.

What was found in Bucha on 4 April 2022? A mass grave, according to police in the Kyiv region and local residents, who said they believed at least 150 people were buried there. The town's mayor said the number of dead could reach 300.

President Zelensky visited the site of the mass burial, as reported at the time.

Protests in the preceding days

The discovery came after two other reported episodes of public dissent on 2 April 2022. In Russia, more than 170 people were detained during anti-war protests held across the country.

In Enerhodar, in southern Ukraine, residents said Russian occupiers had violently dispersed a pro-Ukrainian demonstration. Several protesters were arrested. Russian troops were also alleged to have used explosions to disperse the crowd.

The Enerhodar episode followed the siege of the town, which was part of the wider southern offensive in the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
