What was reported around 29 August 2022 on occupation and dissent

A look back at two reports from the days before 29 August 2022: a bombing in occupied Berdiansk and an arrest in Russia.

What was in the news on 29 August 2022, and what had just happened in the days before it? Two reports stood out in the run-up to that date, one from occupied southern Ukraine and one from inside Russia.

On 26 August 2022, a deputy chief of the traffic police was killed in a bombing in Berdiansk, a city in Zaporizhzhia Oblast under Russian occupation. Russian authorities blamed Ukrainian forces for the attack.

Two days earlier, on 24 August 2022, police in Russia arrested Yevgeny Roizman, the former mayor of Yekaterinburg and a Kremlin critic. The charge was "discrediting the Russian army", brought over his criticism of the invasion of Ukraine.

Both reports belonged to the wider war that followed the 2022 Russian invasion: one concerned the security of occupied territory in the south, the other the treatment of public criticism of the war in Russia.
