A fortress near Respublikanets and a doping probe in Russia

A look back at two items reported in the days before 29 September 2019, one from Ukraine's Kherson region and one concerning Russian laboratory data.

What was reported in the days leading up to 29 September 2019? Two items stand out: an archaeological find in southern Ukraine and an anti-doping investigation involving Russia.

On 28 September 2019, it was reported that a fortress, until recently unknown, had been discovered near the village of Respublikanets in the Kherson region. The structure was described as having been built at the turn of the millennium.

A few days earlier, on 23 September 2019, the World Anti-Doping Agency launched a probe into what it called inconsistencies in laboratory results from Russia. The agency promised the most stringent sanctions if violations were found. Russia had previously been banned from the 2018 Winter Olympics following a similar probe.
