Chernihiv and Zaporizhzhia: regions under strikes in April 2024

Posted: | Filed under: Regions | by Borderland staff

Facts from the days before 18 April 2024 show how Russian attacks hit housing and energy infrastructure in Ukraine's regions.

What did the days around 18 April 2024 reveal about the pressure on Ukraine's regions? The reports available from that period point to attacks on both residential areas and critical infrastructure, far from the capital.

In Chernihiv, a Russian missile strike on 17 April 2024 damaged an eight-storey building in a densely populated area. As reported at the time, 18 people were killed and 78 others were injured. The toll made the strike a major civilian loss for the northern city and put local emergency and medical services under strain.

A few days earlier, on 12 April 2024, Russia launched drone strikes across Ukraine. Critical infrastructure was damaged in Kherson Oblast. In Zaporizhzhia, a fire broke out at the Dnieper Hydroelectric Station, and around half a tonne of oil products leaked into the Dnieper river. The incident combined an energy-sector emergency with an environmental one, both of which fell to regional authorities and utilities to manage.

On the same day, 12 April 2024, Russia test-launched an intercontinental ballistic missile from the Kapustin Yar launch complex in Astrakhan Oblast. The reports present it as a separate event from the drone campaign.

What the pattern shows

Taken together, these reports show strikes reaching a northern city's residential districts and a southern energy facility within a week. For regional administrations, the work ran on several fronts: caring for the wounded and displaced, repairing damaged infrastructure and containing pollution in a major river.
