Dnipro car explosion killed two people on 15 September 2021

Posted: | Filed under: Regions | by Borderland staff

A look back at the blast in central Dnipro, which law enforcement called a terrorist act, and at fatalities in Donetsk region days earlier.

What happened in Dnipro in the days before 16 September 2021? On 15 September, a car exploded in the central part of the city. Two people were killed: Oleksii Kavlak, a veteran of the Anti-Terrorist Operation, and Daria Hrechishcheva, a spokeswoman for the State Emergency Service. Law enforcement officers described the blast as a terrorist act.

The incident drew attention to a city far from the front line, in a week when the war in Donbas also continued to claim lives. On 12 September, two Ukrainian soldiers were killed by separatists in the Donetsk region, after intense artillery shelling by pro-Russian militants that began overnight.

By 16 September 2021, the Dnipro explosion was the subject of a law enforcement response, with the terrorism designation already attached to the case.
