France seizes Russian shadow fleet tanker in the Atlantic

A retrospective on the French military operation, assisted by a British warship, and Moscow's response.

What happened in the Atlantic on 2 June 2026, and why did Moscow reach for the language of piracy? The reports from the preceding day, 1 June, set out the sequence.

The French military, with military assistance from a Royal Navy warship of the United Kingdom, seized a Russian shadow fleet tanker in international waters of the Atlantic Ocean. The operation was reported as taking place on 1 June 2026.

Russia responded by calling the seizure illegal and saying it bordered on international piracy.

The vessels at issue

The Russian shadow fleet is a clandestine network of hundreds of vessels operated by Russia to evade sanctions. Those sanctions followed the G7 countries and the European Union enacting the 2022 Russian crude oil price cap, in response to Russia's 2022 invasion of Ukraine.

The seizure placed French and British naval forces in direct action against one such tanker on the open ocean, and drew an immediate and sharply worded rebuttal from Russia, which described the act in terms of illegality.
