Kharkiv missile strike kills five as Russia claims Orlivka

Posted: | Filed under: Regions | by Borderland staff

A look back at a strike on an industrial area of Kharkiv and a Russian claim of territorial gain in Donetsk Oblast.

What did the news from the front show on 20 March 2024? Two developments stood out: a deadly strike on a regional city and a claim of advance in the east.

On 20 March 2024, a Russian missile strike hit an industrial area of Kharkiv. At least five people were killed and eight others were injured, as reported at the time.

The day before, on 19 March 2024, Russia claimed to have captured the village of Orlivka in Donetsk Oblast.

Two regions, two pressures

Taken together, the reports pointed to pressure on Ukraine's regions from different directions. Kharkiv, in the north-east, faced missile fire on an industrial district, with civilian casualties. Donetsk Oblast, in the east, saw a Russian announcement of a captured village.

The Orlivka claim was Russia's own, and it was made on 19 March 2024. The Kharkiv casualty figures were given as a minimum, meaning the toll could have changed as the day went on.
