Kharkiv Oblast after the Chuhuiv An-26 crash: 1 October 2020

A look back at the aftermath of the military plane crash that killed cadets near Chuhuiv in the Kharkiv region.

What was the picture in Kharkiv Oblast on 1 October 2020, six days after one of the country's worst recent military air accidents? The region was still absorbing the loss of the An-26 training aircraft that went down near Chuhuiv on 25 September 2020.

As reported at the time, the An-26Sh crashed while on approach to land during a training flight. The plane was carrying cadets from Kharkiv Air Force University. The victims included cadets, and the death toll was reported as 26, with one more person wounded. Of the 27 people on board, one survived.

The aircraft was destroyed. It carried tail number 76 and belonged to the 203rd Training Aviation Brigade.

Ukraine declared 26 September 2020 a day of mourning for the dead. By 1 October 2020 the crash remained the focus of attention for the Kharkiv region, where the university that trained the cadets is based.
