Kherson and Mykolaiv regained: the south on 16 November 2022

A look back at the southern front as it stood days after Ukrainian troops entered Kherson and cleared Russian forces from the last city they held in Mykolaiv Oblast.

What did the map of southern Ukraine look like on 16 November 2022? It had changed sharply within a week, after months of fighting that began with a counteroffensive launched on 29 August 2022 to expel Russian forces from the southern regions of Kherson and Mykolaiv oblasts.

Mykolaiv Oblast cleared of Russian-held cities

On 10 November 2022, the Ukrainian military said it had recaptured Snihurivka in Mykolaiv Oblast, the last city in that oblast still controlled by Russia. The same day, Ukrainian troops retook the village of Kyselivka, bringing them within nine miles of the centre of Kherson. Explosions were reported near the Kakhovka Hydroelectric Power Plant.

Kherson returns to Ukrainian hands

On 11 November 2022, Ukrainian troops entered the city of Kherson. It was the only Ukrainian regional capital captured by Russia during the invasion, and its recapture ended an eight-month occupation by Russian forces.

By 16 November 2022, then, the two events described above stood as the most recent milestones of the southern campaign: a regional capital back under Ukrainian control, and a neighbouring oblast with no remaining Russian-held cities. For the communities concerned, the change marked the end of occupation in the places named in these reports.
