Kherson shelling on 24 December 2022 killed at least ten

A look back at the attack on the city of Kherson and the car bombing in the occupied part of the region two days earlier.

What did the final weekend before Christmas 2022 look like in the Kherson region? On 24 December 2022, Russian forces shelled the city of Kherson, killing at least ten civilians and injuring 58 others. The attack was recorded among attacks on civilians during the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

Two days earlier, on 22 December 2022, a separate event took place on the other side of the front line. Andrei Shlepa, the Russian-installed head of Liubymivka in Kakhovka Raion, was assassinated in a car bombing in the Russian-occupied part of the Kherson region. Russia accused Ukraine of being behind the attack.

Two sides of one region

Taken together, the two reports show the Kherson region divided by the front line, with violence affecting both the Ukrainian-held city and the occupied territory. In the city, the toll was civilian: ten or more dead and dozens wounded. In the occupied area, the target was an official installed by Russia, and Moscow publicly assigned blame to Kyiv.

The reports give no further detail on the circumstances of either incident, so the casualty figures for 24 December and the accusation after 22 December are what can be firmly stated about those days.
