A look back at the news from Ukraine and its region in the days leading up to 10 January 2022.

What was happening in and around Ukraine on 10 January 2022? The days leading up to that date brought a public demonstration in Kyiv, a reported attack on a prominent journalist, and regional developments in Kazakhstan and on the Lithuanian–Belarusian border.

Kyiv: a rally and an assault

On 9 January 2022, an action titled "Say No to Putin" took place on Mykhailivska Square in Kyiv.

Two days earlier, on 7 January 2022, Andriy Kulykov, a journalist and co-founder of Hromadske Radio, was attacked on Peremohy Avenue in Kyiv. The incident was not linked to his professional work, as reported at the time.

The wider region

On 7 January 2022, amid the Kazakh protests, the Russian Ministry of Defence reported that Russian troops deployed to Kazakhstan had maintained control of Almaty International Airport and secured critical government buildings in Nur-Sultan, including the Ak Orda Presidential Palace.

On 5 January 2022, the Lithuanian government announced that it would not extend the state of emergency at the border with Belarus, part of the border crisis between Belarus and the European Union.
