Kyiv security operation and Warsaw's troop talks, May 2018
A look back at two reports from 28 and 29 May 2018: a Kyiv operation over a journalist and Polish talks with Washington.

What did the final days of May 2018 show about security in Europe's east? On 30 May 2018, attention centred on a Kyiv operation reported a day earlier, alongside defence talks involving Poland.
On 29 May 2018, the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) carried out an operation in Kyiv to prevent an attempt on the life of Arkady Babchenko, an opposition Russian journalist.
A day earlier, on 28 May 2018, Poland's Minister of Defence, Mariusz Błaszczak, said he had recently talked with U.S. officials in Washington D.C. about permanently stationing thousands of U.S. troops in Poland as a deterrent against Russia.
The two reports came from different places and concerned different matters: one a law-enforcement operation in the Ukrainian capital, the other a defence discussion between Warsaw and Washington.
