Missiles across the regions: Ukraine on 28 July 2022
A look back at strikes on Kyiv Oblast, Kropyvnytskyi and Bakhmut, and an announced push towards Kherson.

What did a single day of war look like across Ukraine's regions? On 28 July 2022, the answer ran from the outskirts of Kyiv to the centre of the country and the Donbas, with a counteroffensive also announced in the south.
Kyiv Oblast: the first strikes in weeks
Russia launched cruise missiles from the Black Sea at Kyiv Oblast for the first time in weeks, according to Kyiv governor Oleksiy Kuleba. Missiles hit Bucha, Lyutizh and Vyshhorod. At least fifteen people were injured, five of them civilians, he said.
The strikes followed an earlier barrage. On 26 July 2022, Ukraine said Russia had fired cruise missiles at targets along its Black Sea coast, including port infrastructure at Odesa and Mykolaiv.
Kropyvnytskyi and Bakhmut
Further inland, Russian missiles hit Kropyvnytskyi on 28 July 2022, damaging facilities owned by Kropyvnytskyi Flight Academy and Air Urga. Five people were killed and 25 others injured.
In Donetsk Oblast, Russian forces shelled Bakhmut with BM-27 Uragan multiple-launch rocket systems. Three civilians were killed and three injured. Six apartment blocks and six detached houses were destroyed or damaged.
The previous day, 27 July 2022, Russia captured the Vuhlehirska Power Station near Svitlodarsk in Donetsk Oblast. It is Ukraine's second largest power plant.
The south: Kherson in focus
On 28 July 2022, presidential advisor Oleksiy Arestovych said an operation to recapture Kherson Oblast had started. Two days earlier, Ukrainian forces had struck the Antonivka Road Bridge in Kherson Oblast with M142 HIMARS systems, causing severe damage and stopping vehicles from crossing. Ukraine also claimed to have destroyed a Russian ammunition depot, artillery and other equipment in the region, killing 51 Russian troops.
On 27 July 2022, Russia said it had destroyed more than 100 M142 HIMARS missiles in an airstrike on Dnipro.
Taken together, the reports from 26 to 28 July 2022 show fighting and missile fire reaching regions from Kyiv Oblast to Kirovohrad's regional centre, the Donbas and the Black Sea coast, with civilians among the casualties in several places.
