Nord Stream 1 gas stays shut as Gazprom links restart to sanctions

Posted: | Filed under: World | by Borderland staff

A look back at the state of the Russia–EU gas dispute on 8 September 2022, after two Gazprom announcements on the pipeline.

What was the state of Europe's gas supply from Russia on 8 September 2022? Flows through the Nord Stream 1 pipeline had not resumed, and Russia's Gazprom had given no route back to normal operation other than the lifting of sanctions.

The position had hardened over a few days. On 2 September, following the G7's announcement, Gazprom said flows would not restart the next day because of a reported "oil leak" in a turbine. It gave no new time frame.

On 5 September, Gazprom went further. It announced that gas flows through Nord Stream 1 to Europe would not resume until sanctions against Russia were lifted. The technical explanation of 2 September was thus followed by an explicit link to sanctions.

The two announcements were part of what was described as the 2022 Russia–European Union gas dispute. By 8 September 2022, the pipeline's flows remained suspended, with no restart date announced.
