Nord Stream 1 stayed shut: what Gazprom said before 7 September 2022

A look back at the stoppage of gas flows to Europe through Nord Stream 1 and the explanations Gazprom gave in early September 2022.

What was the state of Russian gas deliveries to Europe on 7 September 2022? The Nord Stream 1 pipeline was not carrying gas, and Gazprom had given no date for a restart.

On 2 September 2022, following an announcement by the G7, Gazprom said flows through the pipeline would not resume the next day. It cited a reported oil leak in a turbine. The company did not give a new time frame for resumption.

On 5 September 2022, Gazprom changed the terms. It announced that gas flows through Nord Stream 1 to Europe would not resume until sanctions against Russia were lifted. A technical explanation had become a political condition.

The statements were part of the wider Russia–European Union gas dispute of 2022. By 7 September 2022, the two announcements made at the start of the month defined the position: the pipeline was idle, the reason given had shifted, and Gazprom had tied any restart to the lifting of sanctions.
