Omicron reaches Kharkiv region as Kyiv and Odesa confirm cases

A look back at the regional spread of the Omicron variant reported in Ukraine before 19 January 2022.

What did the regional picture of the pandemic look like on 19 January 2022? As reported two days earlier, on 17 January 2022, the first cases of the Omicron strain of coronavirus had been recorded in the Kharkiv region.

The Kharkiv cases did not come in isolation. Omicron had previously been confirmed in Kyiv and in Odesa, so by the middle of January the variant had been detected in the capital, in a major port city and now in a north-eastern region.

The sequence matters for how regional authorities and health services were placed. Detection in three separate parts of the country meant the variant was no longer tied to a single location, and the Kharkiv region joined the list of areas where it had been identified.

On the same date, 17 January 2022, a separate piece of news came from the political sphere: Oleksiy Arestovych left his post as unpaid adviser to the head of the Office of the President and as spokesman for the Ukrainian delegation in the Trilateral Contact Group, citing personal reasons. The reports gave no link between the two developments.
