A look back at the exposure of a police group in Pavlohrad and a shooting at an Odesa market two days earlier.

What happened in Pavlohrad, in Ukraine's Dnipropetrovsk region, on 4 June 2020? A gang of police officers was exposed there, and it had been organised by Dmytro Serdiuk, the head of the local police station.

The case was reported as the exposure of a criminal group operating from within the local police department. The reports named the station chief as its organiser.

Two days earlier, on 2 June 2020, a shooting took place at the Seventh Kilometre market in Odesa. Two people were wounded, and 10 people were detained.

Together, the two reports from early June 2020 pointed to serious problems of crime and law enforcement in regional Ukraine. In Pavlohrad, the focus was on officers themselves; in Odesa, on a violent incident at one of the city's best-known markets.
