Shelling at Enerhodar and missile strikes across Ukrainian regions

A look back at the regional pressures reported around 21 November 2022, from a shelled nuclear plant to strikes on infrastructure in several cities.

What did the regions of Ukraine face as of 21 November 2022? The reports from the preceding days point to pressure on energy sites and cities far from one another, from the south-east to the east and the Black Sea coast.

The most recent report, dated 20 November 2022, concerned the Russian-controlled Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant in Enerhodar. According to the International Atomic Energy Agency, the plant was shelled, and some buildings, systems and equipment were damaged.

A few days earlier, on 17 November 2022, Russia carried out another wave of cruise missile strikes. Strikes were reported in Dnipro, Odesa, Kharkiv and Zaporizhzhia. In Zaporizhzhia, two people were confirmed killed overnight by a missile. In Dnipro and Odesa, critical infrastructure was also targeted. The strikes belonged to the series of nationwide missile attacks on Ukraine in October and November 2022.

A legal ruling about Donetsk Oblast

The same day brought a verdict tied to an earlier event in the Donetsk region. A court in the Netherlands sentenced two Russians, Igor Strelkov-Girkin and Sergey Dubinsky, and a Ukrainian pro-Russian separatist, Leonid Kharchenko, to life imprisonment for shooting down Malaysia Airlines Flight 17 over Donetsk Oblast in 2014. The verdict was delivered in the absence of the defendants.

What the pattern showed

Taken together, the reports from 17 to 20 November 2022 show the regions affected in different ways: energy and other critical infrastructure hit by missiles in Dnipro and Odesa, civilian deaths in Zaporizhzhia, and a nuclear site in Enerhodar damaged by shelling.
