Shelling of Kurakhove killed ten civilians in Donetsk Oblast

Posted: | Filed under: Regions | by Borderland staff

A look back at a day of Russian attacks on civilians in eastern Ukraine, set against strikes on infrastructure earlier that week.

What did the war look like for civilians in Donetsk Oblast on 7 December 2022? In Kurakhove, Russian forces shelled the town, killing ten civilians and injuring five others.

The attack came two days after another wave of Russian cruise missile strikes on Ukraine. On 5 December 2022, those strikes destroyed homes and killed two people in Zaporizhzhia Oblast. They also damaged critical infrastructure, causing power outages in many other areas.

Taken together, the two episodes show attacks reaching civilians in both the east and the south of the country within the same week: shelling of a town in Donetsk Oblast, and missile strikes that hit housing and the energy network elsewhere.
