Shelling of Sumy, Kharkiv and Donetsk regions kills civilians
A look back at reports of Russian attacks on civilians in three Ukrainian regions in the days up to 13 September 2024.

What did the war look like for civilians in Ukraine's border and eastern regions on 13 September 2024? Reports from that day and the two days before it pointed to repeated shelling of towns and villages in Sumy, Kharkiv and Donetsk oblasts.
On 13 September 2024, Russian artillery targeted 15 areas of Sumy Oblast, as reported at the time. Two civilians were killed near the village of Yampil, and nine others were injured.
Kharkiv and Donetsk, 12 September
A day earlier, on 12 September 2024, Russian shelling of the settlement of Borova in Kharkiv Oblast killed three civilians and injured nine more. The wounded included several emergency service personnel.
On the same date, Russian artillery fire in Donetsk Oblast killed three Red Cross workers and injured two others.
Kursk Oblast, 11 September
The fighting was also reported on Russian territory. On 11 September 2024, Russian forces reportedly recaptured 10 settlements in Kursk Oblast, as part of what was described as the 2024 Kursk offensive.
Taken together, the reports from 11 to 13 September 2024 recorded civilian deaths and injuries in three Ukrainian regions in as many days, including among emergency and humanitarian workers in Kharkiv and Donetsk oblasts.
