A look back at 27 July 2023, when Ukrainian forces reportedly regained a Donetsk Oblast village a day after Russian cruise missile attacks.

What was happening on the front line and in the skies over Ukraine on 27 July 2023? Ukrainian forces were reported to have retaken the village of Staromaiorske in Donetsk Oblast, a development within the wider 2023 Ukrainian counteroffensive.

The report followed a night of Russian strikes on Ukrainian infrastructure. On 26 July 2023, Russia launched cruise missiles at Kyiv Oblast, Khmelnytskyi Oblast and Kirovohrad Oblast.

Air Force Commander Mykola Oleschuk said that 36 targets had been shot down. These comprised three Kalibr missiles and 33 Kh-101 and Kh-55 cruise missiles.

Taken together, the two reports showed the situation on 26 and 27 July 2023: missile attacks reaching three oblasts in central and western Ukraine, and, in the east, a reported gain by Ukrainian forces in Donetsk Oblast.
