Two regional developments recorded in mid-June 2024

A look back at Russian claims of captured villages and US sanctions on a Moldovan regional governor, reported in the days before 13 June 2024.

What was happening in the regions on 13 June 2024, and in the days just before it? Two reports set the picture.

On 11 June 2024, Russia said it had captured the villages of Tymkivka in Kharkiv Oblast and Miasozharivka in Luhansk Oblast. The claim was part of the reporting on Russia's invasion of Ukraine at the time.

On 12 June 2024, the United States imposed sanctions on Evghenia Guțul, the pro-Russian governor of Moldova's Gagauzia region. The step was reported as part of Moldova–United States relations.

Taken together, the reports show attention on regional questions on both sides of Ukraine's western and eastern borders: frontline villages in two Ukrainian oblasts, and the leadership of a Moldovan autonomous region.
