Makiivka, Donetsk Oblast
On 3 January 2023, the Russian defence ministry raised the number of soldiers killed in a Ukrainian missile attack on Makiivka, Donetsk Oblast, to 89. The attack had taken place on 31 December 2022. The ministry attributed the casualties to the soldiers' use of mobile phones with tracking systems.

It was carried out with HIMARS rockets and destroyed the building and nearby military equipment. Ukrainian officials claimed the attack killed 400 Russian troops, while Russian officials had first confirmed 63 deaths before raising the figure to 89 two days later.
