A look back at the days around 28 June 2026, when strikes crossed regional lines in both Ukraine and Russia.

What did the map of the war look like on 28 June 2026? The reports from the preceding days show regions in Ukraine and Russia drawn into a widening exchange of strikes.

On 26 June, Ukraine launched what was described as its largest drone attack on Russia since the start of the war, with more than 660 drones sent against multiple regions, including Moscow Oblast. The same day, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said he had approved a "40-day campaign" aimed at compelling Russia to end the war.

Vladimir Oblast in the frame

On 27 June, Ukraine's Security Service announced that Ukrainian forces had struck the Vtorovo oil pumping station in Russia's Vladimir Oblast. The Service presented the strike as part of the same 40-day campaign.

Losses in Ukraine's skies

The war's toll was also visible at home on 27 June. A Ukrainian Air Force MiG-29 was destroyed on the ground by a Russian Geran kamikaze drone at an airbase in southern Ukraine. Another MiG-29 was lost during a combat mission over Poltava Oblast, and its pilot ejected successfully and reached safety.

Taken together, the reports from 26 and 27 June frame the situation on 28 June 2026: a declared multi-week campaign of Ukrainian strikes deep into Russian territory, and continuing Russian drone attacks on Ukrainian airbases.
