A look back at reported Ukrainian advances in Kharkiv Oblast, and the recapture of a town in Kherson Oblast days earlier.

What was happening on the front lines in Ukraine's regions on 7 September 2022? As reported at the time, Ukrainian forces broke through Russian defences in Kharkiv Oblast during a renewed counter-offensive in the region.

The reports said the advance reached more than 30 kilometres into Russian-held territory. Ukrainian troops were said to have captured many towns and cities, among them Balakliia.

Kherson Oblast three days earlier

The Kharkiv push came as fighting was also under way in the south. On 4 September 2022, Ukrainian forces recaptured the town of Vysokopillia in Kherson Oblast, which had been under Russian occupation since March. The Ukrainian flag was raised over the town's hospital.

Taken together, the two reports showed Ukrainian forces regaining ground in both the north-east and the south of the country in early September 2022.
