A look back at two incidents reported on 13 May 2023, a missile strike on a western Ukrainian city and reported aircraft losses across the border.

What had been reported just before 15 May 2023? Two incidents, both dated 13 May 2023, marked the days leading up to that Monday.

In Western Ukraine, Russia launched cruise missiles at the city of Ternopil on 13 May 2023, as part of the wider 2022–2023 series of Russian strikes against Ukrainian infrastructure. Two civilians were injured.

The same day, reports said two Russian Mi-8 helicopters and two fighter jets, an Su-34 and an Su-35, had been shot down in Bryansk Oblast. The aircraft losses were reported rather than independently confirmed at the time.

Together, the two reports showed how the war was reaching both a city far from the front line in Western Ukraine and territory on the Russian side of the border in the days before 15 May 2023.
