What happened in the days before 20 April 2018

A look back at a road crash in Kryvyi Rih, the flooding of a mine in Yenakiieve and a Security Council call over Syria.

What was reported in the days leading up to 20 April 2018? Three items stood out, one of them a road disaster in central Ukraine.

Road crash in Kryvyi Rih. On 17 April 2018, a collision in Kryvyi Rih involving a passenger car, a minibus and a bus left nine people dead and a further 21 injured.

Flooding of the Yunkom mine. On 14 April 2018, militants of the self-proclaimed "DNR" began flooding the Yunkom mine in Yenakiieve. A nuclear explosion was carried out at the mine on 16 September 1979.

Syria and the UN. Also on 14 April 2018, following the bombing of Damascus and Homs, Russia called for an emergency meeting of the United Nations Security Council. Moscow said at the time that it was considering supplying S-300 missile systems to Syria.
