What happened in Ukraine's regions on 9 December 2022?

A look back at reports of abducted nuclear plant staff in Zaporizhzhia and shelling in Donetsk Oblast in the days around 9 December 2022.

What was happening in Ukraine's regions on 9 December 2022? Reports from that day centred on the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant, where Ukraine's Energoatom said Russian soldiers had abducted two senior staff members.

Energoatom said the two workers were beaten before being driven off in an unknown direction. The report was part of the wider crisis surrounding the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant during the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine.

Shelling in Donetsk Oblast

The report from Zaporizhzhia came after two days of reported shelling in Donetsk Oblast. On 8 December 2022, Russian forces shelled the front line in the region, killing one civilian and damaging buildings in Toretsk.

On 7 December 2022, Russian shelling of Kurakhove, also in Donetsk Oblast, killed ten civilians and injured five others.

Taken together, the reports from 7 to 9 December 2022 show pressure on civilians and on those working at a key energy facility, in regions along the front line.
