What Prigozhin's Bakhmut admission signalled on 11 May 2023

What did it mean when the head of the Wagner Group acknowledged ground lost in Bakhmut? On 11 May 2023, Yevgeny Prigozhin confirmed that Ukrainian troops had recaptured parts of the city in Donetsk Oblast from his forces.

The admission came from the Russian side itself, which gave it weight. The Battle of Bakhmut was a major contest between the Russian and Ukrainian armed forces for control of the city, on the eastern front of the Russo-Ukrainian war. Some military analysts later regarded it as the bloodiest battle since World War II. Against that backdrop, any confirmed shift in control of the city's districts mattered for how the fighting in Donetsk Oblast was understood.

A region under fire

The war's effects also reached into Russian public life. On 10 May 2023, a court in Tver Oblast sentenced a poet to four years in prison for reciting poetry critical of the invasion of Ukraine. The sentence came a day before the Bakhmut confirmation and shows how dissent over the war was being punished inside Russia while the battle continued.
