What sanctions did the EU announce against Russia on 25 February 2022?

A look back at the European Union's new measures and a US troop deployment announced a day earlier.

What did the European Union do in response to the invasion of Ukraine? On 25 February 2022, it announced new sanctions against Russia, aimed at the country's financial, energy and transport sectors.

The measures also covered visa policy and included export controls and a ban on export financing. The President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, spoke at a joint press conference with French President Emmanuel Macron. She said the sanctions were designed to have a maximum impact on the Russian economy and political elite.

US reinforcements for Germany

A day earlier, on 24 February 2022, US President Joe Biden and Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin announced that an additional 7,000 US troops would be deployed to Germany. The move was intended to support NATO allies during the crisis.
