A look back at two Russian assaults, on 6 and 8 January 2024, that struck Donetsk, Dnipropetrovsk, Kharkiv, Khmelnytskyi and Zaporizhzhia oblasts.

How far did the damage spread across Ukraine's regions in the days leading up to 10 January 2024? Two reported attacks in the preceding days give a picture of the toll.

On 6 January 2024, Russian forces attacked Pokrovsk Raion in Donetsk Oblast with S-300 missiles, according to local authorities. At least 11 people were killed, including five children, and eight others were injured.

Two days later, on 8 January 2024, Russia launched a massive missile and drone attack across the country. At least four people were killed and 38 injured in Dnipropetrovsk, Kharkiv, Khmelnytskyi and Zaporizhzhia oblasts. Ukraine said it had shot down all eight drones and 18 of the 51 missiles.

Taken together, the two attacks affected five oblasts in the east, south-east and west of the country, and the reported casualties included children in Donetsk Oblast. Regional authorities and emergency services were left to deal with the aftermath as 10 January 2024 began.
