What the early January 2024 attacks meant for Ukraine's regions
A look back at two Russian assaults in the first days of January 2024 that hit oblasts from Donetsk to Zaporizhzhia.

How far did Russian strikes reach into Ukraine's regions in the days before 10 January 2024? Reports from the preceding days showed attacks across several oblasts, in the east and well beyond it.
On 6 January 2024, local authorities said Russian forces attacked Pokrovsk Raion in Donetsk Oblast with S-300 missiles. At least 11 people were killed, including five children, and eight others were injured.
Two days later, on 8 January 2024, Russia launched a massive missile and drone attack across the country. At least four people were killed and 38 injured in Dnipropetrovsk, Kharkiv, Khmelnytskyi and Zaporizhzhia Oblasts. Ukraine said it shot down all eight drones and 18 of the 51 missiles launched.
Taken together, the two attacks affected five oblasts in the space of three days. Casualties were reported in each of them, and the 8 January strike was directed against Ukrainian infrastructure.
