What the front-line reports showed in Donetsk and Kharkiv oblasts

Posted: | Filed under: Regions | by Borderland staff

A look back at reports from 27 and 28 May 2024 on Russian advances and strikes in eastern Ukraine, as they stood on 29 May 2024.

What did the picture from Ukraine's eastern regions look like on 29 May 2024? Two reports from the preceding days set out its outline: territorial losses in two oblasts and a deadly strike on a residential building.

On 27 May 2024, Russia captured the villages of Netailove in Donetsk Oblast and Ivanivka in Kharkiv Oblast. The two settlements lie in different regions, so the reports pointed to pressure on more than one part of the eastern front at the same time.

On 28 May 2024, Russian guided bombs hit a block of apartments in Toretsk, Donetsk Oblast. At least two civilians were killed and six others injured. The strike fell on housing rather than on a military position, and it added to the civilian toll in a region already affected by the fighting.

Taken together, the reports show the two forms the war took in Donetsk and Kharkiv oblasts in late May 2024: villages changing hands, and residential areas coming under fire from the air. Both were reported as part of the Eastern Ukraine campaign.
