What the Kharkiv Oblast offensive meant by 12 May 2024

A look back at the claims and the new front that emerged in Kharkiv Oblast in the first days of the 2024 offensive.

What did Russia's Defence Ministry claim about Kharkiv Oblast on 12 May 2024, and why did it matter for the region? The ministry stated that its forces had captured several villages there, two days after a new attack began.

The offensive opened on 10 May 2024, when Russian forces attacked Ukraine's Kharkiv Oblast near the town of Vovchansk. As reported at the time, this created a new front in the war. The attack was in a border oblast, so the fighting extended to an area that had not been the main focus of operations.

The 12 May statement was a claim from the Russian side. The reports from that day attribute the village captures to the Russian Defence Ministry, and they name no individual settlements.

For the region, the sequence was clear. An assault began near Vovchansk on 10 May, and within two days Moscow was publicly asserting territorial gains. What followed belongs to later chapters of the 2024 Kharkiv offensive.
