A look back at two incidents in eastern Ukraine recorded in the days before 26 July 2024, in Kharkiv and Luhansk oblasts.

What was happening in Ukraine's eastern regions in the days leading up to 26 July 2024? Reports from that period pointed to developments in Kharkiv and Luhansk oblasts.

On 21 July 2024, Russian forces captured two villages as part of the eastern Ukraine campaign: Andriivka in Luhansk Oblast and Pishchane in Kharkiv Oblast. Both were reported as part of the wider fighting in the east.

Three days later, on 24 July 2024, a separate incident was reported in Kharkiv Oblast. Three Ukrainian soldiers were killed and four others were injured in a mass shooting that followed a dispute.

Together, the two reports showed the region under pressure on different fronts: territorial losses to Russian forces in Luhansk and Kharkiv oblasts, and a deadly episode of violence within the ranks of Ukrainian soldiers in Kharkiv Oblast.
