A look back at reports from the front-line regions in the days before 6 February 2024, from Volgograd to Lysychansk to Kherson Oblast.

What did reports from the regions say as of 6 February 2024? In the days leading up to that date, they described strikes and casualties on both sides of the front line.

On 1 February 2024, a Russian drone strike near Beryslav in Kherson Oblast killed two French aid workers. Four other people were injured in the same strike.

On 3 February 2024, Ukrainian long-range drones attacked a Lukoil oil refinery in Volgograd Oblast, Russia. The attack caused a large fire and disrupted operations. Andrey Bocharov, the governor of Volgograd, said that air defences had repelled the attack.

The same day, Russian-appointed local officials in occupied Lysychansk, in Luhansk Oblast, said that Ukrainian shelling had killed at least 28 civilians. They added that ten others had been rescued after being trapped under rubble.

Taken together, the reports from 1 and 3 February 2024 showed the war reaching a southern Ukrainian district, an occupied eastern city and a Russian region some distance from the front. The accounts of the Volgograd and Lysychansk incidents came from Russian-appointed or Russian officials.
